There are many epithets about life. That it’s a merry-go-round, a ladder, a zebra, etc. The meaning is the same everywhere, sometimes there are ups and sometimes there are downs. Life in developed countries gives a sense of certain stability, even on the blackest day. Suppose that person X lives in the USA, and everything was fine until he suddenly lost his job and got bogged down in loans, debts and obligations. First, if person X was working legally, paying taxes, he will definitely receive unemployment benefits, as well as Food Stamps.
Food Stamps, aka SNAP, is a special government program to support supplemental nutrition. This federal program is designed to help those in need increase their budget for healthy food. The gist of it is simple: online you submit an application where you list your family composition, income, and expenses. They calculate how much money you need for food in your situation and send it to a special card that you can use to pay at supermarkets.
Our man X has applied for UI (unemployment insurance) and Food Stamps. So our hungry man X sits and waits for an answer. And then he realizes that he doesn’t have to sit and wait, because in America there is a Food Bank. There is a federal program in the United States – Feeding America.
Feeding America is a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. It serves, virtually, every community in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The food is provided completely free of charge.
As we already know, Feeding America includes many food banks and free soup kitchens. If the soup kitchens are clear, then the Food Bank is something new.
A food bank is basically a place where you can come once a week (or once a month, depends on the rules of the particular location) and get food. From the documents in rare cases they ask for ID (ID cards) and that’s it. No one will get into your soul and ask you if you are hungry. In the USA, a lot of things are built on trust, and if a person comes to get food, it means he really needs it.
A little bit about the kit itself. All food will be of good quality and with a normal expiration date. A food bank is not a dump. It is important for people to eat food rich in nutrients to be healthy. Therefore, there will definitely be fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, chicken. Often sweets, cookies. If there are infants in the family of the person in need, it is absolutely necessary to inform about it. After all, in this case, you can be given additional diapers and baby food.
And now he knows where to turn. He called several organizations to find out where and at what time he can come to get help. That’s it, our man X is no longer hungry and is as focused as possible on finding a job.
After a while, things have picked up and Mr. X is once again a successful average citizen. And he realizes how much the free food helped him at one time. And it’s important for him to give thanks to society for this opportunity. Our man X decides to volunteer.
How do Food Banks work?
So. Charity plays a special role in American life. Some do it out of the goodness of their hearts, some do it for the tax deduction, but in one way or another a lot of people are trying to make the world around them a little better.
Helping a food bank falls into two categories.
Material. Organizations and individuals donate money and products.
Intangible. People come to work as volunteers in these organizations. They donate their time, sort vegetables, form food packages, and many other important tasks. Often whole families come to volunteer to show the children how important hard work and help is.
Now our man X sometimes helps food banks and other people in difficult situations. And now he knows for sure that in the darkest room there is a ray of light.
