Checklist: How to Vet a Charitable Organization

If you’ve decided to make a choice to support a charity and are pondering which organization to choose, we suggest using our organization vetting checklist. In it, we have compiled the most important points to check the transparency of the organization.

To vet a charity organization and make sure it is credible, follow these steps:

  1. Check the legal status: Make sure the organization is registered as a non-profit charity in your country. This can be done by consulting the registry of nonprofit organizations or government agencies. Be sure to have the registration documents on the organization’s website.
  2. Look at the official website: The first step is to go to the official website of the organization. Information about the mission, goals and programs, as well as contact information should be available there. We also recommend looking at social media – this is one sign that the organization is open. The more active the activities, the more informative the publications. They may include reporting, stories of mentees, needs, fundraisers. Pay special attention to the fact that serious charitable organizations do not collect on cards. Lately, it has not been customary to conduct collections even on corporate cards.
  3. Review financial information: Nonprofit organizations often publish their financial reports on their website. Check how they utilize funds and how much money is allocated to charitable causes. As transparent as possible, organizations publish monthly financial, qualitative and quantitative reports to build trust with donors.
  4. research reviews and ratings: Try to find reviews from donors and beneficiaries of the organization. Also check independent ratings of charitable organizations, if available.
  5. Check tax returns: In some countries, charities are required to file tax returns. Check it to make sure the organization is complying with tax laws.
  6. Contact the organization: If you still have questions or concerns, contact the organization directly and ask them questions about their activities and finances.
  7. Look for transparency: Good charitable organizations are usually open and transparent in their operations. If information is too limited or difficult to access, it can raise suspicion.
  8. Check licenses and certifications: Some charities may have special licenses or certifications that prove their legitimacy.

By gathering and analyzing this information, you can make a more informed choice when selecting a charity to support.
