Habitat for Humanity – Building Affordable Housing

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that seeks to empower people in the world’s poorest communities to overcome the chronic shortage of decent housing. The organization originally originated as a grassroots movement on an interracial community farm in southern Georgia. Since its founding in 1976, the Christian housing organization has grown into a leading global nonprofit working in local communities in all 50 U.S. states and more than 70 countries.

In May of this year, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona began construction of its first 3D printed home in the United States. According to a press release, it combines 3D printing using a Build on Demand Printer (BOD 2) supplied by Germany’s PERI Group and traditional methods to create an innovative model of the future.

The 1,738 square foot (~161 square meter) single-family home will have three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and overlook Clark Park. Approximately 70-80% of the home will be 3D printed, including all interior and exterior walls; the remainder will be built using traditional methods. Once completed, the home will be solar-ready; Habitat Central Arizona is also seeking LEED Platinum certification (the highest eco-certification for green buildings) and IBHS FORTIFIED Home certification, which certifies that the building was erected according to FORTIFIED’s improved construction methods.

Using a construction printer will also help Habitat Central Arizona conduct construction during the hottest season, when construction typically slows down because temperatures are too high and put staff and volunteers at risk.

“When we look at the housing challenges facing Arizona, the need for affordable housing is clear,” said Jason Barlow, president and CEO of Habitat Central Arizona. – If we can build decent, affordable, more energy efficient homes at a lower cost, in less time and with less waste, we believe this can be a real game changer.”

The home is expected to be completed in early fall and could be occupied as early as October 2021.
